The benefits of fertilisers, with organic and inorganic, in providing the nurishment plants need in undeniable. We hope the following product list and information helps you to choose what's best for your plants

The fertilisers listed below are representative of the more popular products we provide:

The Trading Hut

Rose Food (3.5-6-11.7) Well cared for roses will need regular feeding, especially at the beginning of the growing season. The fact that roses are normally pruned each year means that the nutrients required for beautiful blooms are removed permanently from the soil around the plant. Proctors Rose Food is a well tried & tested product, which has been used by keen rose growers for many years. A rich powder mixture of minerals and organics for fine blooms and healthy roots.

Bloomer Booster (3-6-8) Proctors granular flower fertiliser has been specially formulated to give a good general feed to the entire garden, but in particular to produce remarkable flowers. Bloomer Booster contains magnesium, which is essential so that the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts can capture the sun's light-energy used for photosynthesis. Also containing essential trace elements, this is the ultimate fertiliser for producing beautiful blooms for your garden or show.

Turbo Fruiter (5-5-10) Another granular fertiliser, Proctors Turbo Fruiter has been specially formulated to pack more bulk into your tree fruits, bush berries etc. Containing magnesium and T/E, Turbo Fruiter also contains iron which is essential for healthy plants. Symptoms of iron deficiency include leaves turning yellow or brown in the middle and between the veins, but also result in poor fruit quality and quantity. Any plant can be affected, but raspberries and pears are particularly susceptible.

Super Shrubber (5-19-10) Just by looking at the phosphate and potash levels found in Proctors Super Shrubber, there's no mistaking how it got its name. This specially designed granular fertiliser for shrubs makes the world of difference to every border. With just the right amount of nitrogen (too much and your plants will look lush and green, but will struggle to fruit and flower), the higher phosphate and potash levels will sustain shrubs throughout the year, providing true healthy growth.

John Innes Base (5-7.2-10) This specialist fertiliser was developed by the John Innes Institute as a balanced fertiliser base for soil based composts. Proctors's John Innes Base is made today from both mineral and organic sources, including sulphate of potash and hoof & horn. Use according to the recommendations of the institute, you can make JOHN INNES Number 1, 2, 3 and the seed compost. Please ask for details if you are interested in making your own JOHN INNES compost.

Super Vegitator (Potato fertiliser) (10-10-10) Perfect for the potato and vegetable grower. Use Proctors Super Vegitator fertiliser to get the best quality out of your crop. More commonly known as a potato fertiliser, it is an easy to spread mineral based granular product. Potatoes are one of the greediest crops when it comes to nutrients. So for best results apply 135 grams per square metre dug in at the time of planting, followed by a top dressing of 65 grams per square metre when established.

Growmore (7-7-7) Developed after World War 2, it was probably the most well-known general all-purpose fertiliser in the market place. An easy to spread mineral based granular fertiliser, it can be applied as a top dressing all around the garden on flowers, fruit & vegetables or under mulches. Growmore is a balanced fertiliser containing equal levels of the three most important plant nutrients; nitrogen, phosphorous & potassium.

Garden Lime A very essential product for any keen gardener, Proctors Garden Lime is excellent in increasing ph levels on all soils types where a reduction in soil acidity is required. Very acid soils prevent nutrients being available to the plant, and can greatly reduce productivity, especially around the allotment. Know what ph your crop likes, then test, and lime accordingly. Be sure to lime 6 months apart from nitrogen fertilisers, as they can cancel each other out, and react badly in the soil.

Sulphate of Ammonia (21-0-0) 100% soluble, this nitrogen fertiliser is fast acting, and can be used where plants are nitrogen deficient. Ideal for green leafed vegetables and producing luxuriant foliage on leafy shrubs, in particular box hedges which are heavy feeders requiring regular treatment, it's the ultimate plant tonic. Can be used every 6-8 weeks during the growing season, but do not over apply. Also often used as a compost activator, as well as a straight for crops. Remember, no lime at this time!

Sulphate of Potash (0-0-50) Another straight fertiliser, this product is very soluble and fast acting, adding essential Potash to soils and composts. SOP helps improve the quality of fruits and flowers and strengthens plant resistance to disease and inclement weather. Symptoms of Potash deficiency can be poor flowering and fruit sets, as well as the leaves turning yellow around the margins which eventually will become brown and burnt. Severe cases show leaf spotting and scorch of foliage. Sulphate of IronIron is a trace element used in many fertilisers, but alone it's used mainly on lawns. It helps with diseases such as fusarium patch and take-all patch which like high ph turf surfaces, as well as helping in worm control. Its most common use though is as a moss killer. Regular applications every 6-8 weeks in the winter months will help stop any moss invading your lawn. It also has the added benefit of burning off certain weeds if used regularly and helps prevent algae problems.

Single Superphosphate (0-18-0) Made by the action of sulphuric acid on raw rock phosphate (also called Appatite) this is one of the world's most important fertilisers, and probable one of the oldest inorganic ones. Partly soluble and a usable form of phosphorous by plants, it must be well dug in. Ideal for feeding root vegetables such as carrots and beetroot, it also assists in seed germination. Use in soils containing a sufficiency of lime so as not to waste this valuable nutrient through poor plant uptake.Magnesium SulphateAlso known as Epsom salts, MgO is necessary for the colouring of leaves. Heavy rain will readily wash MgO out of light soils and can also be low when potash or high-potassium fertilisers have been used. MgO deficiency can affect vegetables like cabbages, lettuces and potatoes, fruit such as apples, cherries and grapes. Leaves turn yellow between veins and around the edges, and may eventually turn red, purple or brown. Apply as a foliar spray or spread over the soil.

Kieserite Permitted as an organic nutrient source by the European Commission Regulation, is an earth mineral mined from naturally occurring marine deposits. Chemically known as magnesium sulphate monohydrate, it provides soluble sources of both Magnesium and Sulphur for plant nutrition, and is not effected by, or effects, soil ph. Essential for healthy leaves and photosynthesis, a deficiency in magnesium is common in tomatoes, apples, grape vines, raspberries, roses and rhododendrons.

Blood Fish & Bone (5.5-8-6) This organic based powder fertiliser, is an excellent alternative to Growmore. Also a balanced fertiliser, it can be applied in much the same way and is widely used as a top dressing on lawns, flowers and vegetables. However, the nutrients in BFB are slower to release, excellent when a long term feed is required.Digging into the soil before planting or mixing in with your compost, BFB is the multi-purpose organic fertiliser.

Bone Meal (4-20-0) A traditional source of nitrogen and phosphate derived from animal waste, it's a popular versatile organic product for use on bulbs, shrubs, planting of trees and as a dressing on vegetables and plots. The nitrogen becomes available over a week or two of microbial action, and the phosphate is almost as available to crops as that of superphosphate. Don't be put off by this product's strong smell, as this gritty powder fertiliser is excellent for all round the garden.

Compost Activator (Organic based) Create your own nutrient rich compost with this gritty, organic based powder compost activator.Produced from a mixture of quality ingredients, Proctors Compost Activator will reduce garden and non-cooked kitchen waste to valuable crumbly garden compost ready to use for mulching or digging in.For best results, sprinkle the Compost Activator over the waste at a rate of approximately a good handful per sq yd / sq m, for every layer 6 to 8 inches / 15 to 20 cm in depth.

Hoof & Horn (13-0-0) This 100% organic fertiliser is a by-product of the meat processing industry, and as such may not be for the squeamish. However, it is one of the better organic nitrogen fertilisers, and contains a nice dash of phosphorous to boot. With a slow natural release of nitrogen, some immediately available with the rest continuing to release over 4-5 months, it is perfect for use under glass as well as also being used as an ingredient in other fertilisers such as John Innes Base.

Dried Blood (12-0-0) You've probably guessed it, another by-product of the meat industry. If you want organic though, then this is one of the most effective organic fertiliser around. Solid rapid release of nitrogen is achieved, despite its low solubility, due to small particle size and easy decomposition after application. Especially beneficial when growing leaf crops such as lettuce, spinach and cabbages, it also makes an excellent top dressing for foliage plants in the green house and conservatory.

Calcified Seaweed The cycle created by this organic fertiliser is a significant reason for its importance.Quickly colonized by bacteria living in soil, they feed off the huge reservoirs of calcium, nitrogen and phosphorus available in the seaweed, enriching the soil quality. The fertiliser nutrients are also transferred directly to the root structures of plants, making calcified seaweed doubly effective as a fertiliser product.Plants need nutrients beyond calcium, nitrogen and phosphorous, such as iron and carbon, and with additional trace elements, calcified seaweed can provide it all.Notable for its flexibility, calcified seaweed not only regulates the ph. of your soil, but it can also be used throughout the calendar year.

Poultry Manure Pellets Used as a non-chemical fertiliser, poultry manure pellets vary in analysis, but typically contain 3% Nitrogen, 2% Phosphate, and 2% Potash, as well as trace elements. With a variable pH and a tendency towards alkalinity, poultry pellets are not suitable for use on lime-hating ericaceous plants, but rather used mainly for vegetable and fruit crops.Dried, processed, and often sterilised during manufacture, poultry pellets are slow release, and an excellent alternative to raw manure, which can contain harmful bacteria.

Lawn Sand (4-0-0) This popular easy to use product is very effective in giving your lawn that Spring boost. Consisting of Ammonium Sulphate, Iron Sulphate and sand, it is not to be confused with sand for ‘top dressing the lawn’, which has no chemical content. Lawn Sand will help kill existing moss on a lawn and many different types of weeds, while at the same time helping to green up your grass. However, it will not cure a moss problem, which will require alternative stronger treatments.

Spring & Summer Lawn Feed (11-5-5) This very safe to use product is designed for all lawn types of all sizes. It is made as a mini-granular for easy application while still providing a good coverage. Proctors Spring and Summer Lawn Feed will give your lawn that lush look that you crave for, and the Iron content will help keep that moss at bay. The Magnesium Oxide content helps maintain Magnesium levels in the soil, which is part of the chlorophyll essential for photosynthesis.

Autumn & Winter Lawn Feed (3-10-5) A fertiliser that is often overlooked, but all good lawns need an Autumn/Winter feed as well as the summer feed most of us do without question. This 3-10-5 has been designed to give the lawn that extra protection throughout the cold months without causing excess top growth which causes problems. The high Phosphate helps provide healthy roots, and many of the problems faced by lawn keepers in the Spring can be greatly reduced by not ignoring a lawn in the Autumn/Winter.

Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer (7-2-3) Proctors LFW+M, with its added high iron content, treats moss in addition to feeding and weeding your lawn. Unlike other similar products, Proctors still use a micro-granular rather than mini-granular, and haven’t increased the weed killer content just to compete on the sq. meter coverage per bag. This means Proctors LFW+M is safer to use, and in many instances has 4 times as many granules per sq meter, making it more affective at reaching those troublesome weeds.
